Gunite (Shotcrete or Sprayed Concrete)

Shotcrete (gunite or sprayed concrete) is concrete, with high strength applied with high pressure jet. It usually contains an increased cement content (compared with common concrete) and smaller aggregates. Gunite is laid on a surface after ejection from a nozzle to form a layer of concrete over in that area.

Gunite is used mainly to support seriously harmed elements of a building such as pillars, beams, slabs, foundations, walls, masonry, etc. Beyond its application to the surface of concrete and masonry can be applied to rock, soil, excavation, etc.

The advantages of shotcrete are:

  • sprayed on vertical surfaces or surfaces with large slopes.
  • achieves the same result with lower layer thickness compared with the cast concrete
  • achieves better cooperation and adherence to the existing-old concrete because of the high-pressure of the spraying
  • It has high strength due to the low rate of water / cement
  • It does not require any formwork
  • Gunite layers can be given a flat finish whereever this is required.

Preparation process of shotcrete:

For the preparation and launch of the gunite, a machine, an air compressor, a mixer and the tubes that carry the mixture to spray position, are required.

There are 2 types of shotcrete: the dry and the wet method.

With the dry method: the mixture is prepared at the site. The dry ingredients of concrete (cement, aggregates) are mixed together and channeled through the tubes. The addition of water takes place before the exit of the mixture from the nozzle.

Wet method: The mixture is being brought on site ready from a concrete plant containing all the ingredients (cement, aggregates and water), placed on the machine and sprayed directly.
In both methods, the mixture is moved through elastic or metal pipes at the point of intervention with the help of the compressor.

Other admixtures can be added in the gunite mixture such as accelerators, retarders, sealants, steel, polypropylene or glass fibers, to avoid cracking during hardening.

Before the launch a good cleaning of the old surface coatings is required with water pressure or hydro / sandblasting. Epidomos Ltd. is equipped with the latest equipment in the world and with permanent, continuously trained personnel, that guarantees the smooth implementation of shotcrete projects.
